An Introduction To Baltimore

Author: Alison Cole

Baltimore, located on the east coast of the United States, is the largest city in the state of Maryland, and is better known as Charm City. It boasts a large natural harbor located beside the Patapco River, and is a bustling port. Baltimore is located at a distance of 200 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, close to the Chesapeake Bay. More than 600,000 people reside in Baltimore, in the midst of 6,400 acres of parkland. The country's national anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner, was composed in Baltimore by Francis Scott Key. Key had survived the bombing of Fort McHenry and was imprisoned on a British ship on September 13, 1814. Upon the cessation of the bombing, the sight of the American flag flying high motivated him to compose the Star-Spangled Banner poem, which finally became a song and the national anthem.

Baltimore is host to about 14 million tourists each year who are attracted by Baltimore's warm hospitality, modern comforts, and unending list of attractions. The first stop of every tourist is the Inner Harbor- a festive marketplace with shops, eateries and plenty of activities. Baltimore offers a complete list of experiences to the tourist: a Civil War museum, world class art museums, the aquarium, a science museum, the Babe Ruth Museum, comedy clubs, fine dining, theaters, concerts, movies, antiques, boat cruises, historic homes, churches and synagogues, and much, much more. The major highlights apart from the Inner Harbor are the Baltimore Museum, the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center, the Baltimore Ravens and Fort McHenry. The major-league Baltimore Orioles team is based at Camden Yards, with small cafes, microbreweries, and stores in the surrounding streets.

Also, one can find tantalizing restaurants, quaint pubs, and beautiful boutiques, along with historical charm and cultural attractions all over the city. A world-class transportation system and pleasant weather enhance the tourist experience.
